During the night, it is very hard to see where bullets go. Soldiers couldn't tell if the bucket hispt their target or not. The Tracer Bullet invented by Great Brittan helped exactly that. Bright flaming lights follow its path to show the soldier its path. On the base of the bullet, there is pyrotechnic charges. Though each bullet has the same idea, there is different types of tracer bullets. Bright tracer, subdued tracer, and dim tracer are the different types of bullets.
These were invented in 1915. Even in today's military we use modernized tracer bullets. The Russians and Chinese also use tracer bullets. Where British bullets leave a red trail, Russian and Chinese ones leave green. Modernized tracer bullets can be very dim and only seen with night vision equipment, which wouldn't be available back then. Disadvantages to bright tracer bullets are that it can give away the location of the soldier firing at the other.
