Flamethrowers were something new and never used in war before. They had a simple use : creating flames from launching burning fuels. The first modernized flamethrower was presented to the German army in 1901 but they date back to the 5th century B.C.E.. Back in those times, they took a long tube and filled it with burning materials such as coal and blew into it like a blow gun. The modernized Flamethrowers were much easier to use and safer for the person shooting with it. Richard Feidler is the man who came to the Germans with the idea and models of the modernized flamethrower. Some Flamethrowers shot flammable gases and others shot actual flames.
Flamethrowers were usually a backpack like container to hold the gases and a nozle gun to shoot with. The Germans brought terror to the French and British with their invention. The French and British later on adopted this weapon. The U.S. doesn't hasn't used Flamethrowers since 1978 because of the horrible deaths they cause.
